Additional Information: In 1609 the scarlet passion flower was taken from its native tropical America to Italy. It was presented to Pope Paul V by Simone Parloscn, who compared the plant to Christ's crucifixion. According to Parlosen, the 3 stigmas signify the nails, the corona represents the crown of thorns, the 5 anthers represent the wounds, and the 10 parts of the perianth symbolize the 10 faithful apostles. |
